Winner of a prestigious World Press Photo award in 2014, young Russian photographer Danila Tkachenko is taking part in an exhibition in New York.

Tkachenko was awarded first prize in the Staged portraits stories category of the World Press Photo awards last year for his photo series Escape. A graduate of the Rodchenko Moscow School of Photography, in Escape Tkachenko takes on the theme of hermits in the Russian and Ukrainian countryside, creating a study on their withdrawal from society. The wider theme of the work is the issue of internal freedom within modern society.

Despite growing up in Moscow, Tkachenko is particularly drawn to the countryside. “It’s a place where I can hide and feel the real me, my true self, out of the social context,” said the photographer.

The Escape series will be exhibited alongside other photographs that tackle the issue of social identity in The Powers That Be at Station Independent Projects in New York until 9 August.

Station Independent Projects is located on the Lower East Side at 138 Eldridge Street, Suite 2F.
