The Moscow city government is planning to bring “perfumed television screens” to the Russian capital for its New Year celebrations, according to Moscow newspaper Moskovsky Komsomolets.

The screens will show video clips of scenes from other countries, and the area surrounding them will be filled with aromas associated with the relevant country.

According to Andrei Shemelinov, an aromatisation expert, the multimedia screens are due to be installed at Christmas fairs and in central streets in Moscow.

“We associate particular smells with each country. For example, at New Year France smells of chestnuts [...] Germany of fried sausages, Italy of spices and coffee. So for each journey we want to create a set of smells, so that people can not only see, but feel the celebration,” Mr Shemelinov said.
