Star Wars rumoured to film in Dubrovnik

According to speculation by a number of press outlets, the Croatian city of Dubrovnik is set to serve as one of the locations for Star Wars: Episode VIII.

Croatian news website Dnevnik.hr contacted the Croatian Audiovisual Centre (HAVC) and the Dubrovnik City Council, but both organisations refused to either deny or confirm the reports. According to Dnevnik.hr, a deal has been done and shooting could start as soon as March, but both organisations are contractually bound not to comment on the matter at present.

In recent years Croatia has served as the backdrop for a number of TV shows and films, including Game of Thrones, of which seasons two to five were partly shot in Croatia. This was among the first projects to benefit from Croatia’s cash rebate incentive scheme, which was launched in January 2012 and is one reason for the country’s popularity as a shooting location.
