Nomad Games to be highlight of CIS anniversary

The Nomad Games will be the highlight of the cultural programme organised to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS).

“The Third Nomad Games are expected to be held at Lake Issyk Kul in eastern Kyrgyzstan in September. The event is designed to show the history of nomadic peoples, their traditions, customs and culture. [...] This event gives a powerful impetus for the revitalisation of the traditional national sports, revival of spiritual consciousness and historical memory of the nomadic peoples of the world,” Representative of Kyrgyzstan to the CIS and Kyrgyz Ambassador to Belarus Kubanychbek Omuraliev told BelTA news.

According to Mr Omuraliev, more than 40 events have been scheduled for the milestone anniversary year. These include meetings of the CIS supreme bodies, and notably a meeting of the heads of state of the participant countries, which will take place on 16 September in the Kyrgyz capital, Bishkek. Cultural events will including a dedicated “CIS Week” across the region, the broadcasting of special television and radio programmes, and a school lesson devoted to the CIS on 1 September. The international forum of students and undergraduates will also be held at Lake Issyk Kul in autumn.

The Commonwealth of Independent States is a regional organisation made up of nine former Soviet Republics. The purpose of the association is cooperation in political, economic, environmental, humanitarian and cultural fields.
