A new Eurasian equivalent to the Academy Awards will be established in Russia, according to deputy head of the Russian Cinematographers’ Union, Oleg Ivanov.
According to Mr Ivanov, the launch for the awards will likely take place during the summer, within the framework of the Moscow International Film Festival.
In December last year film director and head of the Russian Cinematographers’ Union Nikita Mikhalkov called for the creation of a Eurasian alternative to the Oscars.
“I think that today there is a certain taboo, our culture and literature face a certain barrier [...]. As for our country, especially in today’s situation, we would like another voice to be heard in the world,” Mr Mikhalkov stated.
