President of Tajikistan Emomali Rahmon has criticised Tajik national TV and radio channels for a lack of professionalism.

Mr Rahmon made the critical statements as part of his address during the inauguration of two new national TV channels dedicated to sport and film yesterday in the Tajik capital, Dushanbe.

In addition to deriding national TV channels for their inefficiency and grammatical mistakes, the president called the work of camera operators and TV announcers “unprofessional”.

“Many journalists go on the air without preliminary preparation. [...] The fact that the same journalist conducts economic and music programmes is evidence of a lack of skilled personnel,” he added.

Mr Rahmon went on to argue that this lack of professionalism and low quality of programming was behind low viewing figures for the TV channels.

The president also had sharp criticism for the national radio stations, which “air mainly musical programmes and senseless dialogues with listeners,” centering on the “propagation of low quality music and songs by new so-called stars”.
