Yandex, Russia’s leading internet search engine, has created a map to show musical preferences across the country.

The map is based on data collected from Yandex’s radio service, Yandex.Radio.

According to the map, the music most listened to throughout the country is “energetic”, but there are differences in musical tastes between the regions. In St Petersburg, for example, the preferred genres are jazz and indie music, whereas Muscovites favour drum and bass. A passion for dubstep and music with a “gloomy” mood was recorded in the Volgograd region, while post-rock fans are concentrated in the Krasnoyarsk and Irkutsk regions. The study also found that listeners in the Khanty-Mansi Autonomous District have a particular penchant for trance music.
