The Uzbek government has approved plans to update the country’s filmmaking facilities over the next five years.

The “Action plan for the modernisation of national cinema, strengthening of the technical base, and further development of cinema” aims to see the national film studio, Uzbekfilm, equipped on a par with leading film studios around the world.

“At Uzbekfilm you can already see the changes outlined in this document,” said the studio’s general director, Otabek Musaev, at a press conference.

The programme is also set to include special training for film professionals, such as new two-year film directing courses and master classes by experienced filmmakers. A group of prominent film specialists from the country is also due to meet and learn from their counterparts in Russia, the Czech Republic and South Korea.

In general, the new law aims to create a uniform legal framework within cinema, covering processes of production, distribution, storage and broadcast of films, as well as a system for the rental of domestic and foreign works. The legal document will also identify the economic foundations of the film industry and the basis of the relationship between Uzbekfilm and private film companies.
