Pedestal design for Moscow Vladimir the Great Statue revealed

25 April 2016

The home of Moscow’s upcoming Vladimir the Great Statue has been revealed, with pictures of the pedestal design published on the Facebook page of the Moscow City Government Committee for Architecture and Town Planning.

According to Chief Architect of Moscow Sergey Kuznetsov, who was interviewed by the Russian business newspaper Vedomosti last week, the pedestal is designed to represent a “drop causing ripples in water, in order to create associations with the ritual of baptism”.

After months of dispute regarding the location of the monument, the statue is set to be erected on Borovitskaya Ploschad in central Moscow, a location protected by UNESCO’s World Heritage Committee. Plans for the pedestal, which have been developed by architectural bureau Ai Architects, will be sent to UNESCO for review, said Mr Kuznetsov.

“The monument’s height will be 16 meters without a pedestal,” said Vladimir Tsvetnov, director of the Russian Culture Ministry’s department of cultural preservation. “The statue will be made of bronze and the pedestal will be made from granite.”

According to the executive director of the Russian Society of Military History, Vladislav Kononov, it is hoped that the statue will be in place in time for Russian National Unity Day on 4 November.
