Moscow metro station to exhibit works by Goncharova, Kandinsky and Lentulov

Moscow’s Park Kultury metro station is set to exhibit works from the Tretyakov Gallery collection, including those by avant-garde artists Natalia Goncharova, Wassily Kandinsky and Aristarkh Lentulov.

The metro exhibition, which forms part of the educational project “Intensive. 20th century.”, will see the art works displayed in the metro station’s entrance hall, as well as in the station itself.

According to the head of the Tretyakov Gallery’s press service, Anna Kotlyar, the project is still in development, but among the suggested works to be exhibited are the paintings Peacock Under a Bright Sun (1911) by Goncharova and Lentulov’s The Bell Tower of Ivan the Great (1915). In addition, The Clouds are Growing (2007) by Erik Bulatov is expected to feature.

“The goal of the project is to bring art closer to the people. We want people to understand what the Russian avant-garde is [...] we want people not to perceive this art as foreign,” Ms Kotlyar stated.

The works form part of the collection of the Tretyakov Gallery’s building on Krymsky Val, which houses the only permanent exhibition of 20th century Russian art in the country.
