Year-long Hungarian culture festival to launch in Poland

A year-long Hungarian culture festival will launch next week in Poland, to mark the 60th anniversary of both the Poznań protests and the Hungarian Revolution in 1956.

The festival will centre on the events of 1956 and will feature a new play and concerts by the Hungarian National Philharmonic, along with several exhibitions.

Organised within the framework of a broader government initiative to commemorate the anniversary, the festival will formally open with a performance by acclaimed contemporary ballet group Győr Ballet at Warsaw’s Polish Theatre (Polski Teatr) next Thursday.

A special emphasis will be placed on Hungary at the International Book Fair taking place in Warsaw on Thursday, while the Hungarian National Philharmonic conducted by Zoltán Kocsis is set to give concerts in Warsaw, Szczecin, Kraków, Poznań and Katowice during the autumn. The National Museum in Kraków will also host two exhibitions relating to Hungary, beginning in October 2016 and running until the end of 2017. The first will explore Hungarian painting between 1830 and 1930, while the second will focus on the avant-garde.

The memorial year marks the 60th anniversary of the June 1956 protests in the Polish city of Poznań against the communist government, and Hungary’s anti-Soviet revolution that took place from October — November of the same year.
