The US government uses Netflix to control the minds of people around the world, according to Russian Culture Minister Vladimir Medinsky.
“They understand how to enter everyone’s homes by getting into every television with the help of Netflix and through this TV into the heads of everyone on Earth,” Mr Medinsky said told the Russian online news site Rambler News Service. “But [Russians] don’t grasp this.”
A number of Mr Medinsky’s critics responded with humorous and perhaps slightly less than sincere statements.
“Naah, actually it was created to get into the bed of every person on Earth,” said radio station Echo of Moscow’s Washington correspondent, Karina Orlova. Posting on Facebook, she recommended that Mr Medinsky “chill [...] and watch some Netflix.”
The Minister found support, at least, from Karen Shakhnazarov, who heads up state-run film studio Mosfilm and claimed that Mr Medinsky was correct to defend local companies competing with Netflix, referring to new regulations adopted earlier this year.
