Girl power: Lithuanian designer Justina Semčenkaitė interrogates beauty standards

2 August 2016

Check out Girl Power, a collection by Lithuanian designer Justina Semčenkaitė that questions beauty standards and media influence on body image.

The collection sits on the border between clothing and art, employing humour to encourage reflection on the issues surrounding body image and desire for approval, which prevent girls from wanting to grow up as a unique personality.

Girl Power includes such pieces as the Boobie Coat, which sits at the core of the entire collection. It both covers the body and simultaneously reveals more than any other clothing item. The Cat Costume aims to desexualise the stereotypical image of catwoman, covering the model from head to toe.

“When I started digging deeper into the ‘beauty standards’ topic, it didn’t take long to understand media influence on young girls’ attitudes on what is considered beautiful. Thanks to the media [...] the desire to be unique is replaced with the desire to be socially approved and evaluated in number of likes and comments. I use fashion and humour as my tools to encourage everyone to start questioning beauty standards and think of the importance of uniqueness,” says designer Justina Semčenkaitė.
