Kosovo wins first Olympic medal

8 August 2016

Judo star Majlinda Kelmendi has made Olympic history, winning Kosovo’s first ever medal – what’s more, it was a gold!

The 25-year-old, who was Kosovo’s flagbearer at the opening ceremony last Friday, beat Italy’s Odette Giuffrida in the final of the women’s 52kg judo event to take home the gold.

“I just proved to them that even after the war, even after we survived a war, if they want something they can have it. If they want to be Olympic champions, they can be – even if we come from a small country, a poor country,” Ms Kelmendi said after her victory.

Kosovo has made its Olympic debut at this year’s games in Rio de Janeiro, having become a member of the International Olympic Committee two years ago. Ms Kelmendi previously won bronze at the 2008 Olympics while representing Albania.
