Watch: debut video by new Tatar hip hop project

Have you ever heard rap in Tatar? Probably not, but you’re in luck today. Tatarka, a St-Petersburg-based artist from Naberezhniye Chelni, a town in Tatatrstan, released her first video, Altyn, which means “gold” in Tatar.

The video features all the trendiest things from the region and inspired by it: Gosha Rubchinsky, suburban high rises, Vetements, and 90s fashion. It was also partly filmed in the St Petersburg metro, and the song’s lyrics talk about the modern obsession with Instagram and Youtube.

Outside of performing, Tatarka is known as Irina Smelaya – she is a full-time Youtube vlogger.
