Dreaming of a white Christmas? Join the Kazakhstani ski expedition to the South Pole

23 December 2016

If the wintery weather has failed you and you’re faced with a dull grey sky rather than a blanket of pristine white snow, hop on board Kazakhstan’s first ski expedition to the South Pole.

The team — made up of athletes Yuri Yushin and Ilyas Galimbekov, and medical researcher Dauler Sharipov — have just begun their 217km ski expedition to the pole, having just completed a climb to the summit of Antarctica’s highest point, Mount Vinson.

Organised by the Kazakh Geographical Society, the trek should take the team around ten days.
