The Croatian capital, Zagreb, has undergone a transformation — the city’s central area now boasts an impressive ski slope.

The new addition is in aid of today’s special slalom ski race, which will mark 50 years of the FIS Alpine Ski World Cup. The race will see 18 legends of the sport such as Karl Schranz and Jean-Claude Killy, the first winners of the World Cup, race down Toma Bakač street and past Zagreb’s cathedral, finishing on the city’s main square. 1,000 cubic metres of snow were shipped to the downtown area on Monday night in order to construct the slope.

To demonstrate the huge changes that have taken place over the 50 years of the competition, the skiers, who are from a range of generations, will use kit from their own era. In addition, slalom gates similar to those used at the first World Cup will be put up at the start, while high-tech gates will be used at the finish.

After the event, which will be broadcast internationally, the ski slope will remain until 15 January and will be open for children’s ski classes.
