St Petersburg is known for its imperial grandeur and palaces lining the geometrical lines of perfectly parallel and perpendicular avenues. Local and visiting Instagram stars rarely pay homage to the city’s suburbs and high rises — after all, they’re not as vast and ubiquitous as those in Moscow and other Russian cities, where the cult of concrete is much more prominent.

Follow photographer Anton Vaganov for the unexpected angles of the city, for chaotic, ordered, romantic and gloomy photos of suburbs, and for snapshots of the city’s everyday life: from church services and sporting competitions to car parks, humourous shots and random everyday beauty.

There is also some occasional haunting reportage-style photography — outtakes from the photographer’s daytime job as a photographer for local newspaper Delovoy Peterburg.
