Moscow architecture studio Meganom to design slender supertall New York skyscraper

1 June 2017

Russian architecture studio Meganom is set to take on its first US project in the form of a skinny supertall skyscraper planned for Midtown Manhattan.

Reaching a height of 305 metres, the tower will be “unlike anything else built in New York,” the team behind the project told Dezeen.

The 262 Fifth Avenue skyscraper, located close to Madison Square Park in Manhattan’s NoMad District, will be a feat of innovative architectural design.

“A progressive example of forward-thinking and contemporary design, it will include several ‘firsts’ in terms of its design and environmental sustainability features,” the team stated.

While the new structure requires two existing buildings to be demolished, the base of 262 Fifth Avenue will incorporate a 12-storey historic limestone building. The slender residential tower will be wrapped in aluminium and glass and topped with an arched viewing deck. Its unusual structure will see a mechanical core run up the west side of the tower, rather than the centre, affording column-free living spaces.

“The form of the skyscraper is inspired by a unique structural system that separates the building’s functioning core from its living spaces, creating expansive, unobstructed, column-free and customisable full-floor residences — an inventive design solution unprecedented in a New York high-rise,” Meganom said of the innovative design.

The project has backing from Five Points Development, a young US-based venture led by Israeli developer Boris Kuzinez.

Meganom’s recent commissions include the renovation of the Kremlin Museum and the creation of a new masterplan for Moscow’s Gorky Park.
