Could your design light up Tallinn’s Old Town?

The Estonian capital, Tallinn, is looking for designs to illuminate its medieval city walls.

To this end, the City authorities have launched an open competition for teams to apply to light up the picturesque walls — along with their 27 towers — and Toompea Hill, the seat of the Estonian parliament. The mayor’s office has supplied 3D panoramas of the areas to be illuminated.

According to Tallinn’s official website, cited by BBC News, Deputy Mayor Kalle Klandorf hopes “to create a nocturnal view of Old Tallinn that will linger long in the memory, and serve as a new calling card for our city”.

Teams, which must include a qualified lighting designer, must apply with examples of their work by 19 July. Following a period of evaluation, a shortlist of three teams will have until 11 September to create a detailed proposal. The overall winner will take home a prize of 8,000 euros (approx. $9,000), while the runners-up will win 7,000 ($8,000) and 6,000 euros ($7,000) each.
