Will 2017 be a bumper year for filming in Croatia?

10 August 2017

Croatia already serves as the stunning backdrop for many international film and TV productions, including Star Wars and hit HBO series Game of Thrones. But 2017 could be the best year yet for filming, says the Croatian Audiovisual Centre.

According to Croatia Week, major productions have been drawn to the country by a financial incentive scheme, launched five years ago by the national government. In 2016, four feature films — among them Star Wars: The Last Jedi, filmed in Dubrovnik — and three TV shows — including the BBC’s McMafia — made use of the tax incentive programme.

Six international productions applied for the scheme in the first half of 2017 alone, indicating that this year may be a recordbreaker in terms of local spending by productions. To achieve this feat, 2017 must surpass 2015, when ten productions generated 22 million euros ($25.8 million) in local spending.

While the full list of projects has yet to be revealed, already confirmed to have filmed in Croatia this year are Robin Hood Origins (Dubrovnik and Istria), historical TV drama The Terror (the island of Pag) and McMafia (various locations including Zagreb, Rovinj, Pag and Split).
