Uzbek chefs hope to enter record books with mammoth plov

21 August 2017

Anyone who has visited Central Asia will be more than familiar with plov — the ubiquitous rice-based dish claimed by numerous countries as their national dish. Plov is nothing less than a national obsession in Uzbekistan, where a team of 50 top chefs is hoping to break records with a portion weighing more than six tonnes.

Last week, Uzbekistan’s Milliy TV channel gathered the chefs to prepare enough plov to fill a gigantic cauldron-esque pan with a diameter of 4.2 m, which fed over 22,000 hungry residents of Olmaliq in the Tashkent region. Ingredients included 826 kg of beef, 1,650kg of rice 480 kg of salt and 90 kg of peas.

What’s more, this is only a foretaste of what’s to come: the mammoth plov fest of last week was a mere rehearsal for the real world record attempt on 8 September.

Will you be there to claim your portion?
