The Hague is to host its first large-scale exhibition of Russian contemporary sculpture, with more than 100 works from some of the country’s best known artists going on display.
Among those with works on show at Russia XXI are Russian collective AES+F, world-renowned architect Alexander Brodsky and artist Vadim Zakharov, a leading figure in the Moscow Conceptualism movement.
As part of the Russia-Netherlands Year 2013, the Dutch city will exhibit a selection of objects, installations and spatial artworks that challenge the notion of sculpture. The aim of the exhibition is to expand the notion of sculpture — largely seen as a static discipline involving bronze, wood and stone — by introducing a variety of interactive pieces.
The show, a collaboration between Russia’s National Centre for Contemporary Arts and the Museum Beelden aan Zee in The Hague, further hopes to spark debate on the ideological and social dimensions of sculpture, especially within Russia. The show will open on 28 May in two locations in The Hague, the Lange Voorhour until 8 September, and Museum Beelden aan Zee until 27 October.
