Yelena Popova

Nottingham-based Yelena Popova’s paintings often seem to be a convergence of Russian Constructivism and Minimalism, with their depiction of geometric forms and a colour palette so subdued it's almost transparent. Working across painting, video and installation, Popova is interested in the idea of balance and visibility. Balance of Probabilities (2011), a multi-part installation of paintings on linen, exhibited as part of the Saatchi Gallery’s 2011 show Gaiety is the Most Outstanding Feature of the Soviet Union, displays the delicate balance between harmony and dissonance, and stillness and movement, that runs through Popova’s work.
