A routine journey for a truck driver turns into a nightmarish voyage into hell in this psychological drama from Sergei Loznitsa. Georgy (Viktor Nemets) is driving a freight truck into Russia when an unpleasant encounter at a border crossing leads him down a dark side-road into the country’s brutal past. Images of violence and alienation coalesce as Georgy’s odyssey becomes increasingly bizarre. Beautiful-looking, yet malodorous with tainted memories, Loznitsa’s 2010 fictional debut is as poignant and introspective as his renowned documentary work. Letting symbolism do most of the heavy lifting Loznitsa’s portrait of Russia is one of a country haunted by its past, yet petrified of its future.
