György Fehér’s adaptation of James M. Cain's The Postman Always Rings Twice observes the fragile mechanisms and primeval fears that can easily turn trust into betrayal. Set in 1930’s Hungary, a wife (Ildiko Bansagi) and her lover (Janos Derzsi) plot to kill her older husband (Dzsoko Rozsics). Shot in stark black-and-white, mirroring the cold black heart of the novel’s protagonist, Passion is a near-silent ballet of suspicion and mistrust. Fehér strips Cain’s prose of its lyrical elegance to create something far more visually poetic; an oppressive drama saddled with the crushing weight of a soul burdened by the inescapable consequences of sin.
