The Death of Mr. Lazarescu

Cristi Puiu’s 2005 darkly comic exposé of the health system in communist-era Romania follows an ailing old man named Dante Lazarescu as he finds himself shipped from hospital to hospital with doctors continuingly refusing to treat him. Dante is flung through hell and back, experiencing a series of unfortunate encounters in the process. It soon becomes clear via the bureaucratic process that thrusts him from pillar to post that Puiu is making a satirical stab at the Romanian film industry and the timid allegorical cinema which his generation were raised upon.
