Crows

Occupying the realm of childhood, where dreams and reality merge seamlessly into one another, Kedzierzawska’s 1995 film Crows takes a disturbing topic and swaddles it in the innocent subjectivity of adolescence. A gaunt 10 year-old girl called Crow grows tired of her mother’s negligence and kidnaps a neighbouring toddler. She insists the child call her ‘mummy’ and treats her with the same disdain her own mother shows her. Adults are noticeable absent from the narrative, and the film’s dreamlike atmosphere of loneliness highlights a widening generation gap, no more so than its heartbreaking final shot of Crow pleading to be noticed by her mother
