Katrīna Neiburga and Andris Eglītis

Katrīna Neiburga and Andris Eglītis have collaborated to transform the Latvian Pavilion into a space of deliberately made shanty-like architecture. Inside, the artists have presented several video pieces devoted to “garage elves” — a community of enthusiastic makers and modifiers who have come to occupy the Latvian garage spaces built as part of a housing project for commuting workers in the 1970s and 80s. The repurposed spaces and their owners are a reminder of post-Soviet transformation: former engineers and manual labourers from factories that have since closed down, immersing themselves in hobbies reliant on skills that were once the bedrock of Soviet economic policy.
