Alante Kavaite won a directing award at Sundance for Summer of Sangaile, which achieves a touching honesty and sensitivity in its portrayal of 17-year-old Sangaile, who is obsessed with stunt planes but is too gripped by vertigo to fly them. A romance with another young woman who is brimming with creative joie de vivre shakes her from her troubled circumspection, and deeply impacts them both as only intense teen love can. In Kavaite’s first feature since her 2006 French-set Fissures, she shows herself as a daring voice in Lithuanian cinema, pushing screen representation to reflect the realities of a diverse society.
