Making a film always requires a degree of courage in revealing one’s inner world - never more so than with Rocks in My Pockets, the feature debut of Latvia-born, New York-based animator Signe Baumane. In it she tells with naked honesty and bracingly black humour the stories of the battles with mental illness of five women in her family, including herself. A blend of hand-drawn work and papier-mâché stop motion, it depicts the difficulty of trying to live a ruse when psychological problems are stigmatised, and won the critics’ award at last year’s Karlovy Vary Film Festival.
