Una Gunjak’s debut short The Chicken, drawn from her own personal memories, has been a huge success for the Bosnia-born director, showing in Critics’ Week at Cannes and winning her a European Film Award last year for best European short. It’s set in Sarajevo in 1993, and brings high stakes into play when a small girl, realising a chicken is destined for the dinner table, sets it free from her apartment into a landscape marked by snipers.
