Yu: The Lost Country

“I am calling myself an exile, and not an expatriate — because I can’t, even if I wanted to —return ‘home’.” Photographer Dragana Jurisic was born to a Serbian mother and Croatian father in a country that fell apart in 1991. Her photo book, modelled on and featuring extracts from Rebecca West’s 1941 travel book on Yugoslavia Black Lamb and Grey Falcon (1941), is not a homecoming so much as a recreation of a homeland. The book is designed so that images are disconnected from one another, interspersed with photos from Jurisic’s family archive, and the gaps filled up by Jurisic’s memories.

Yu:The Lost Country is available as a special edition from the artist’s website.
