Transformer station

Erno Lestyán’s Transformer Station rises up out of the narrow streets in the historic Jewish Quarter as a gigantic brick-clad utilitarian block which poses stark contrast to the surrounding crumbling, yet ornate, façades. While some might see the building as an angular intervention that juxtaposes violently with the more delicate Art Nouveau elements of its immediate neighbours, the Transformer Building was once a symbol of progress and modernity under the shadow of Hungary’s communist regime. Built in 1969, the towering volume is defined by its horizontal and vertically combined ventilation, window strips and industrial red brick.
