The Habsburg exterior harkens back to the castle’s palatial grandeur, but after the Second World War much of the castle was damaged and its interiors were stripped and rebuilt in a style better suited to communist ideals. The museum chronicles the history of Hungarian art, starting with early art on the ground floor right up to post-1945 art in a restructured permanent exhibition called Shifts. The exhibition presents a historical context for the various artistic movements and examines how Hungarian art related to contemporary trends.
