For a week each July the fabulous, open air, Tbilisi Museum of Ethnography turns into a massive hilltop music venue as musicians and dancers from all over the country descend on Tbilisi for seven days of folk music and traditional costumes. The event brings together local singing groups from the some of the most remote parts of the country, each of which preserve an ancient and unique musical tradition. Polyphonic singers from further afield — like Corsica and Bulgaria — are invited to put Georgian chanting in an international context. After programmes lasting all day, Georgia’s biggest folk music and fusion acts top the bill in the evenings.
