Check out the New East finalists turning heads at the Architectural Photography Awards

New East photographers and backdrops have taken centre-stage in this year’s Architectural Photography Awards.

The 2018 shortlist featured Lithuanian photographer Marius Liutkevicius and Polish imagemaker Pawel Paniczko in the Exteriors category, with judges paying tribute to each man’s work abroad with stark concrete edifices. Liutkevicius won the jury’s eye with his bold shot of Lanzarote’s geometric architectural shapes, while Paniczko was praised for his take on the Long Museum West Bund in Shanghai.

The region also provided a rich canvas for photographers looking to make their mark. Netherlands-based Roman Robroek was shortlisted in the Interiors category for his shot of the control room of a semi-abandoned power station in Budapest, while Ryan Koopmans was nominated under Buildings in Use for an image of the Soviet-era Sacartvelo sanatorium. Koopman’s work in Georgia follows families displaced by the Abkhazia conflict in 1992 who were given sanctuary in these unoccupied buildings. 25 years later, hundreds remain living in these architectural remains of the Soviet past.

The four images will be exhibited with the rest of the finalists at the World Architecture Festival in Amsterdam from 28–30 November, before the overall winner is announced.
