Romanian director Corneliu Porumboiu honoured with retrospective at Madrid Film Festival

20 October 2015

The films of Corneliu Porumboiu, a key figure in the so-called Romanian New Wave, are to be screened in the Spanish capital from 20-23 October.

Porumboiu is the award-winning director of 12:08 East of Bucharest (2006) and Police, Adjective (2009), both of which will shown as part of the Premio Mirada Internacional arm of the Madrid International Film Festival. In all, six works will be screened during the retrospective, ranging from a short produced in 2002 when Porumboiu was still a student to his 2014 football documentary The Second Game.

Tonight, Porumboiu will attend the screening of his most recent work, The Treasure, which won the Un Certain Talent prize at this year’s Cannes Film Festival, before taking part in a public discussion with film critic Javier Tolentino.

The retrospective is the result of a collaboration between two Madrid-based organisations: the Romanian Cultural Institute and the New Directors Platform, a Spanish body dedicated to the promotion of new cinema. It is supported by the Academia de Cine and the Romanian National Cinematography Centre.
