Russian artist Pyotr Pavlensky sets fire to door of Russian Security Service

Russian performance artist Pyotr Pavlensky set fire to the door of the Russian Federal Security Service (FSB) in Moscow earlier today.

The art activist launched the attack against the headquarters of the FSB, located on Lubyanka square in central Moscow, in the early hours of this morning and was detained by the police.

Pavlensky titled this artistic action “Menace” and published a video online. In his description of the video, he dubbed the performance “a glove thrown by society in the face of terrorist threat” and described the FSB as an organisation that “operates through continuous terror and holds power over 146 million people”.

Pavlensky is known for his violent artistic actions. In 2012 he sewed his mouth shut in protest against the detention of Russian punk group Pussy Riot, while in November 2013 he nailed his scrotum to the ground on Red Square.
