Samara photographers turn potholes into toy battlefields

11 March 2016

Two photographers from Samara have found a novel way of highlighting the poor state of the Russian city’s roads.

Alexander Shadrin and Grigory Lyapin place Star Wars figures, Lego men and toy soldiers around potholes, which transform into apocalyptic landscapes when photographed in close-up. In one scene, two armies engage each other in epic battle around a rocky lake, while Lego builders face a daunting construction project in another.

Local officials have been slow to repair the city’s road surfaces. In February, when Samara poet Alexander Gutin called on the mayor to address the problem in an obscene poem, the mayor’s response was to register a complaint with the police.
