Kuryokhin Contemporary Art Award winners announced

The winners of the annual independent Sergey Kuryokhin Contemporary Art Award were announced on Saturday in St Petersburg.

Andrey Bartenev received the Grand-Prix Pop-Mechanica for Say: I Love You!, which, according to the project’s director Anastasia Kuryokhin reflects the contemporary idea of ​​Kuryokhin Pop-Mechanica. In the Best Curatorial Project category, Polina Popova, Vyacheslav Berechinsky and Sergei Bugaev were victorious with the Pavel Pepperstein exhibition Hunters of the Marble Heads (Archaeology of the future). Maria Safronova won the prize for Best Visual Art for her project The Game of General View, while Polina Kanis took home the prize for Best Media Object for Pool and the Archstoyanie festival received the award for Best Public Art.

For the first time, the ceremony was held in a new location at the Tovstonogov Bolshoi Drama Theatre.

Established in 2009, the Kuryokhin Prize is one of Russia’s most prestigious independent art awards. The prize is based on the Pop-Mechanica principles established by Russian avant garde composer Sergey Kuryokhin, which privilege unpredictability, improvisation and provocation within art, and pursue new interaction between different art forms.
