Belarusian journalist Pavel Sheremet was killed this morning in an explosion in the Ukrainian capital, Kiev.

Sheremet wrote for Ukrainska Pravda, a popular online news site. He was driving a car belonging to Olena Prytula, a founding editor of the news site, which exploded around 7.40am local time.

The Ukrainian General Prosecutor Yuriy Lutsenko later reported that there were traces of explosives at the scene, leading him to declare it a murder case.

According to Taras Berezovets, an expert on the Ukrainian political landscape, Sheremet’s death was the result of malicious intent.

“Pavel Sheremet’s assassination is an attempt to scare society. The authors of this crime had a cynical intention to spread panic and distrust,” he wrote on Facebook.
