Treasure trove: Polish hunt for Nazi gold train begins in spite of doubts

A team of treasure hunters has begun digging at a site in the south-west of Poland where they believe a Nazi train laden with stolen gems and arms to be hidden, despite doubts that the train exists.

The team of intrepid treasure seekers are led by Piotr Koper from Poland and Andreas Richter from Germany, who believe they know the train’s location based on “very promising” ground-penetrating radar results. According to their research, the train was hidden in a tunnel in 1945. Experts claim, however, that there is no evidence that any such train is located there.

Since the Second World War legends have circulated that a train filled with up to 300 tons of loot including gold, gems and guns disappeared into a warren of tunnels constructed by the Nazis — part of a secret military project which they never finished.

Whether the train is anything more than legend will be known soon — the dig, near the city of Wałbrzych, is expected to take no longer than ten days.
