Romania’s Olympic Committee President Alin Petrache has promised to resign amid a humiliating team kit scandal.

Together with a 60-year low for medals, with only four won by the country’s athletes so far in Rio, the team’s official outfits have shrunk in the wash, logos have peeled off shirts and material has left dye stains on athletes’ bodies.

“I’ll resign after the Games so an inquiry will not be hampered by the hierarchy,” Mr Petrache said in an official statement on Monday.

The Romanian authorities have begun to investigate the Bucharest-based firm who produced the kits and have subsequently stated that they suspect counterfeiting.

These developments have led to allegations of inadequate sports financing in the country, which has led to many top coaches leaving for more lucrative posts abroad.
