A new childhood: Soviet picture books in UK first

24 August 2016

Don’t miss the opportunity to see an incredible selection of picture books from 1920s–30s Soviet Russia at London’s House of Illustration.

The early 20th century was a period of great innovation in Russian picture book illustration, with many avant-garde artists finding refuge in illustration for children’s books, in the face of increasingly limited artistic freedom.

Shown for the first time in the UK, this exhibition showcases a selection of rare books and original works from the unparalleled collection of Sasha Lurye, allowing a privileged glimpse into this fascinating moment in history.

The collection features work by such well known and influential names as Marc Chagall, El Lissitzky, Vladimir Tambi, sisters Olga and Galina Chichagova, and Vladimir Lebedev.

A New Childhood: Picture Books from Soviet Russia will run at London’s House of Illustration until 11 September. More information and tickets can be found here.
