Georgia wins 2016 Junior Eurovision Song Contest

Georgia has won the 2016 Junior Eurovision Song Contest (JESC), which took place last night in Valletta, Malta.

Represented by ten-year-old Mariam Mamadashvili, who sang Mzeo (Sun), Georgia won 239 points to take home the trophy.

Armenia finished second with 232 points, while Italy came in third with 209 points.

Jon Ola Sand, the EBU’s Head of Live Events, commented, “This competition is an excellent way for public service broadcasters to support young artists, and help bring their talent to an international audience. It was amazing to see all this talent on stage. Mariam’s performance was incredible — we look forward to seeing more of her in years to come.”

The JESC is a song competition organised annually by the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) since 2003. Participants must be between the ages of ten and 15. Although similar in many ways to its adult counterpart, a distinctive feature of the JESC is that performers must sing predominantly in one of their country’s national languages. 17 countries took part in this year’s edition.
