World’s longest train line hailed “New Silk Route”

The world’s longest train line, which runs from the Chinese city of Yiwu to east London’s Barking Rail Freight Terminal, has been dubbed the “New Silk Route”.

The term, coined by the Chinese government to describe the project, refers to the ancient network of trade routes linking the east and west, from China to the Mediterranean Sea, known as the Silk Route or Silk Road.

Last week a train began its 12,000 mile trip along the route, which takes in Kazakhstan, Russia, Belarus, Poland, Germany, Belgium and France and takes around 18 days to complete.
