20 April will see Ukraine’s inaugural National Film Awards celebrate the best of the country’s cinematic talent.

Supported by the newly established Ukrainian Film Academy, the awards were founded by the team behind Ukraine’s leading film event, the Odessa International Film Festival.

Films will compete across 14 categories, including best film, director, cinematography, screenplay, and original score. The top prize available will be the Golden Dziga, named in honour of pioneering documentary filmmaker and cinema theorist Dziga Vertov, best known for Man with a Movie Camera (1929).

“We believe the Ukrainian film industry has big potential and will do everything to make national cinema an important part of Ukrainian cultural life,” Viktoria Tigipko, president of the Odessa IFF and founder of the Ukrainian Film Academy and National Film Awards, said in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter.
