Photo of the week: what is an idol without followers?

10 March 2017

Our photo of the week by Polish photographer Pawel Fabjanski is a meditation on idol worship.

Fabjanski’s work is recognisable for its punchy, highly saturated and somewhat surreal visual style that comes from years of studio experience working with intenational brands and prestigious magazines.

His series Distance explores the relationship between an idol and his fans and believers, only Fabjanski does not focus on any specific figure — the photo shows a crowd in identical costumes in a indistinguishable space, as if cut out from the rest of the world.

For his personal projects, the photographer has previously said he’s interested in “the thin line between art and commerce”. This image, however, concerns itself with a wider phenomenon, a culture that encourages us to “like” and “follow” and make idols of people we might never have encountered in real life.
