Wrocław hosts huge retrospective of works by sculptor Magdalena Abakanowicz

26 June 2017

If you’re in the Polish city of Wrocław over the next couple of months, you can’t miss the major retrospective of works by renowned sculptor and fibre artist Magdalena Abakanowicz. Spanning a number of public outside spaces and seven exhibition venues, the retrospective stands as a tribute to the avant-garde artist, who died in April this year.

Known particularly for her treatment of textiles as a sculptural medium, Abakanowicz radically transformed tapestry as a mode of expression, engendering deep visual and tactile experiences.

Encompassing Abakanowicz’s wide-ranging career — from her earliest textile works to her striking final sculptures — the extensive exhibition focuses both on her personal contribution to 20th-century art and her enduring impact on contemporary artists.

Effigies of Life, A Tribute to Magdalena Abakanowicz (1930 – 2017) will take place at locations across Wrocław until 25 August, and is supported by Irmina Nazar and Artur Trawinski’s ArtEast Foundation. Find out more here.
